The Poor man's dog.

The one absolute, unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world - the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous - is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he can be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace, and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his grave side will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death.

Responsible pet guardianship is one of the things that I am advocating, I have always been wondering if people who earn less money can be responsible pet guardians, those people who earn 250pesos a day, they have 5-10 children who needs to eat, some cats and dogs who needs to eat too. My question is why do this people get dogs even if they know that they are not financially blessed? Is it because they wanted to have an additional family member? or they just need someone to guard their property?

If you belong to the middle class or upper class sector of the society, it is easy for you to say that a dog must be brought to a veterinarian especially if it is medical emergency, but what happens to the dogs of those people who can't even give their family a decent life? Some of this dog owners can't even bring their sick children to the hospital, can we expect them to bring a sick dog to the vet?
In the dreamland, all dog owners have extra cash to support his pets, but in reality some dog owners just don't have extra money, that's why they allow their dogs to stray so that they can fend for themselves. Can we stop them from having pets? No, why? Because it will be hard for them to understand it is for their own welfare, in fact they can't even control their own carnal desire, that's why slum areas are like factory of children. What will happen to their dog if it was run over by a car? Well, if there is a kind veterinarian who will take a charity case, then the dog's life maybe saved. But in reality, even if you check on line, it is too hard to get a list of this clinics, they may give you a discount but they will never give their service for free. If there is a charity veterinarian who is reading this right now, please email me.
We maybe spreading awareness using social media, however most of this people don't even have an access to computers. They may not even know that there is a free anti rabies vaccination near their place. Will the veterinarians or animal welfare groups go to slum areas to vaccinate dogs one by one? will they talk to the owners about spay and neuter? Maybe.

In the Philippines, we do not have a lot of animal welfare societies. Some Barangays don't even have dog pounds, and if they do, most of the time they are not trained how to catch a stray dogs, so there are times when a dog will be strangled to death. This is a sad reality that everyone must be aware of. People keep on buying dogs, only a handful of people are willing to adopt dogs from animal shelters or from the street and still people complain that euthanasia of healthy dog is murder. Yes it is murder, but animal shelters just don't have a choice, there are thousands of animals who are fending for themselves on the street, and they will only have a room in the shelter if a dog has been adopted or has been destroyed. If dogs will continue to live in the street, they will be facing a lot of danger, they can be hit by a car, taken by people who test chemicals on dogs, taken by people who use dogs as baits in dog fighting rings, taken by people who use dogs as shark baits, taken by people who kill dogs for their coats, taken by people who kill dogs for their meat, and the list goes on and on. They will be lucky if a person will open their house for a stray dog, which happens very seldom. If we boast that we are DOG LOVERS, then breed should never be an issue! Adopt a dog from a shelter now! or the blood of the innocent dogs that are being destroyed everyday would be on our hands! Now if you prefer purebred dogs then it's ok, but please consider adding an adopted member to your pack.

Now let me do some public service, I would like to ask the help of my readers, please consider donating some of your extra cash to this charities. Even 1$ would go so far.
